Kaly XL2.0 Electric Skateboard Full Review
Despite creating electric skateboards that are almost synonymous with fine art, the Kaly NYC company allegedly declared bankruptcy towards the end of 2022. If you come across a Kaly board in the marketplace, should you still buy one? After putting on a hundred miles on my brand new XL2.0, I can confidently say that the this board is still a top-of-the-line option that delivers overwhelming impressive performances and best in class features that will not be trumped in many years to come. But Boutique boards like this will also require a lot of learnings and maintenance, all without a formal instruction manual. Let's take a deep dive here.
One of the standout features of the Kaly XL2.0 Electric Skateboard is its impressive acceleration. This is one of the few boards that makes me stand in a very aggressive angle forward in order to tap into its full acceleration power. If you weren't in the right position, the board will just take off and leave without you on it. In 2022, It features dual 6385-190Kv motors with 4823 Watts per Motor, powered by 12S-4P Battery stack with 21700 Cells at 725Whs Capacity. With a top speed of more than 35+ miles per hour, this board can go from zero to 30 in a matter of seconds with its fully enclosed gear drive system, making it ideal for riders who crave speed and excitement. The gear drive system makes one of the coolest sounds when engaged. It almost sounds like an aggressive whistle. And thanks to its powerful motor and responsive controls, the Kaly XL2.0 Electric Skateboard is capable of handling steep inclines and rough terrain with ease, giving riders the confidence to push their limits and explore new terrains.
But it's not just speed and power that make the Kaly XL2.0 such a compelling option. This board also boasts a range of top of the line features that make it a pleasure to ride. The deck, for instance, is crafted from high-quality carbon fiber, fiber glass, and basalt. It is designed to provide excellent support and comfort while absorbing vibrations, even during extended rides. The trucks are responsive and well-balanced, giving riders the agility and control they need to navigate tight turns and sharp corners with ease. The bushings can swap positions making the board more responsive if you move them inwards and more stable as you move the bushing outwards away from the center of the board. The board comes with custom 6061 aluminum wheels. These wheels provide the best structural integrity as compared to plastic wheel cores. As a plus, these Aluminum wheels just look out of this world AND scream premium to anyone who sets their eyes on this beast of a board.
However this board is not for beginners. To fully manage this monster of a board, the owner must be prepared to DIY maintenance and conduct repairs themselves. This requires dedication to learn not just how to ride an electric skateboard, but also to understand the it's intricate inner workings. It maybe a daunting task in the beginning, but hell it is a rewarding one. Because these skills are transferable from the Kaly boards to another electric skateboards and even other form factors such as ebikes, escooters and EUCs. And maybe even RC cars if you are into that. There is a community of more than 3000 users around the world in the Kaly NYC Facebook group and most of them are incredibly helpful if you have questions and need help. Every time I had a question. Someone would swoop in to help in minutes. I am still in awe of how great this community is. Just don't ever complain about Ernesto on Facebook for any reason, or you may find an army with pitchforks coming after you.
And because this is a boutique board, it lacks some of the sophisticated integrations that are installed on many of today's newer electric skateboards such as remote start, integrated LEDs, and even auto turn off. There's once I forgot to turn off my board and 3 hours later I came back and it was still on. The board also drains the battery automatically even when it's turned off so that you need to recharge and cycle the battery about once a month or so. Otherwise it will be completed drained with you'll end up with a brick. You also need to balance the batteries once a while to maintain battery health. But that's true with all batteries. You can use the VESC app to adjust settings and monitor battery performance and battery health. So that you can prevent things like you know ….fire. Remember only YOU can prevent Eskate Fires with proper monitoring and maintenances. And as with all boutique boards, it does not come with instructions or warnings, you need to be asking a lot of questions and be constantly in and out of the Facebook group learning things. Just be warned that buying a board like this requires dozens of hours learning and asking questions if you are not already an expert yourself. So make sure you set aside time to learn and tinker besides just going out there to shred.
Regardless of whether if Kaly NYC will make a comeback in the future. I truly believe the community can keep this brand alive as an open source project for knowledge and support. There are already so much documentations for this board and it's parts that you'll always be able to have backups and replace your wear-tears. With so many owners panic selling their Kalys on the marketplace, I think it's completely worth it to grab one today at a discount and enjoy the Last of the Kalys and treat it with the respect it deserves.
